More on guns

FOX News anchor #TuckerCarlson spent the first twenty minutes of his nationally televised show on Tuesday, July 5 railing on the Governors of Illinois and New York for their moronic statements regarding gun control.
Both states are among the most stringent laws in the country regarding firearms, yet they are the site of the last two mass shootings. Both states also have Red Flag laws, so someone needs to explain why, if they did not work in Illinois and New York, they will work nationally.
Additionally, the New York Governor was asked at a press conference for the numbers upon which she based her decision that firearms need more regulations. Her answer was that the numbers did not matter (hence the axiom, “Never allow facts to get in the way of ideology”)
The Illinois Governor railed about the Highland Park incident, while failing to mention that more people were killed in the City of Chicago on the same day. There was not political value in mentioning inner city violence.
The question of how to deal with this is complex, but there are things which can be implemented to address the issue. The return of involuntary commitment (that will cause the American Civil Liberties Union to throw a tantrum) and civil immunity for the reporting persons. That should be accompanied by legislation providing civil and felony criminal penalties for false or malicious reporting to a governmental entity.
They both addressed the racial component in mass shootings, but the reality is that only two of the incidents in the past decade have been racially motivated and those were in New York and South Carolina.
Then there is the issue of the availability of tactical rifles, NOTE: AR-15 is one of numerous models of tactical rifles.
No one seems to be asking where the money came from to purchase a tactical rifle which is about twenty-five hundred dollars. These shooters are unemployed and are highly unlikely to have that kind of available cash. It is known that the father of the Highland Park shooter accompanied him to make the purchase. If that father provided the money to buy the guns, he should be criminally accountable for the actions that his son used those guns for.
There are parameters for almost all of the shooters. They are white, male and under twenty-one and are disenfranchised for whatever reason. They plan extensively before carrying out the attack and most expect to be part of the final body count.
There is literally no way that the parents and friends of these shooters did not witness abhorrent behavior that could have been addressed and prevented many of these events. In both the Sandy Hook and Uvalde incidents, the shooter killed a parent before a mass shooting.
Kneejerk reactions are not the solution.
