The World in which we live

There are over one million police contacts each and every day, but the only ones which receive the attention of the national news media are those that appear to end badly. It is clear that, because police officers are given authority that is not available to others, they should be held to a higher standard and held accountable for misconduct. But fabricating facts to create a narrative disrespects society as a whole and creates an environment causing police officers to leave the profession.
The majority of the high profile cases that receive national attention occur in urban cities where the calls for service run into the hundreds of thousands per year, Police officers are, first and foremost, human beings with feelings and emotions, but they need to leave those in their personal vehicle in the parking lot. To criminalize behavior which the rest of society does on a daily basis is setting a standard that puts officers in peril for simply performing their duties.
The cry from people is that officers are under or improperly trained. To be a police officer in Scotland requires five years of training before they get out on the street. England spends eighteen months training officers on driving pursuits. The simple costs of this amount of time would bankrupt a City.
Training in any occupation is always fluid and needs to updated as times change. But training officers to effectively deal with human behavior, which is unpredictable at best, is something that police trainers have battled for decades. Police officers are not parents of the public and do not reach the populous at an early enough age to build a foundation of respect. When police officers go into the schools to build relationships with children, a segment of the public screams indoctrination.
Children are being taught that they do not have to respect law enforcement, religious or teachers and there are no consequences for the failure to comply with directives from these people. The confrontations which generally result in consequences derive from the home situation from which the child was raised.
Young people are inundated with videos on You Tube and Tic Toc showing police officers being denigrated, demeaned and mocked while they show extraordinary restraint and self-control. This leads the viewer to believe that they can engage in that behavior without fear of consequences. When there actually are consequences, these people whine and cry that they have done nothing wrong.
The City of Chicago is a prime example where the gangs control the streets. These people have no concern for human life and are predators, yet the political leadership fails to take any substantive action to curb the violence. It will only continue to deteriorate until society decides that it will no longer tolerate this behavior. This society is approaching the border of chaos.
