There has been a move afoot which is threatening the ability of law enforcement to function by claiming that it offers transparency in the public. Commonly called ‘Cop Watchers’, self-anointed constitutional scholars are listing the names and pictures of undercover police officers using public record requests claiming to be journalists. The City of Los Angeles, California has filed suit against a group which, using public records laws, created a searchable database containing the personal information of LAPD officers. This has resulted in threats against those officers and their families.
The U.S. Supreme Court has yet to accept a case on the limitation, if any, of self-proclaimed ‘journalists’ whose only intent is to exact revenge on law enforcement for their perceived wrongs. These individuals, with their cellphone cameras, invade police actions and give legal advice to people who are interacting with police in traffic and criminal investigations.
The result of this behavior will be to cause officers to leave the profession and to discourage people from joining law enforcement agencies nationwide.
